I am grateful that he is not going to the synod and my own bishop is. I think it's sad that so many members of the hierarchy think those of other cultures can't put Jesus above everything in this world and renounce marriage for the sake of the kingdom. I think a great part of what's wrong in the world today is that so few of those in leadership are willing to challenge the rest of us to become better people, to rise above ourselves and learn to live in the light of Christ. All we can do is pray for them.

Talk about the soft bigotry of low expectations! Is celibacy a gift? Something valuable? Then why is it inconceivable that indigenous Australians would accept celibacy? And why, exactly, are indigenous Australians unable to accept celibacy, when it’s been accepted everywhere else that the Catholic Church exists on earth.

What steps have been taken to try to encourage vocations among indigenous Australians?

But, of course, this is pretty much the same trick they tried with the Amazon: Please let us allow this one minor exception for cultural-pastoral reasons! And then once the exception is made it becomes universal almost overnight. It’s similar to what happened with communion in the hand, altar girls, EMHCs, etc.

Argue for married priests. Fine. But don’t use these bogus arguments about cultural sensitivities. We see what you’re doing.
