Count me in among the number of Catholics who are, by disposition, reflexively pro-Israel, and need this sort of reporting to remind us that the world often isn't black and white in the ways we would like to to be.

--> As an interesting coincidence, I was at a meeting of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre when I read this article (my wife was being invested). The Order's mission is to support the Christian presence in the Holy Land, which includes Gaza and all areas under the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. We heard reports about the situation there, and it's pretty dire.

--> Luke, I think that a Pillar Explainer about the EOHS (and equestrian orders, in general) would make a pretty good story. I'm sure that y'all have more than enough ideas for stories, but maybe this one could help spur (no pun intended) charitable contributions for our brother and sister Catholics and Christians in the Holy Land.

Thanks so much for this article, Luke. It’s a complicated situation over there in Gaza with this war and this article helps shed light on that.

Also, an article on the Church’s teaching on just war would be helpful for Catholics here in the USA, many of whom are ignorant at best of the Church’s teaching on the topic.

My understanding was that there was a cease fire and then Hamas decided not to release the rest of the hostages and the war resumed.

My husband and I are members of the EOHSJ and have been donating to the Latin Patriarch, especially to the special collections for the Holy Family Parish since the war started. It is a very complicated situation and has been since the end of WW II when the state of Israel was formed and Palestinians (Christians as well as Muslims) lost their homes. It's good for us to remember that Christians lose their lives in these attacks. It's not just Muslims against Israelis. Israel would just as soon all Christians leave. Forgiveness is not a concept that is embraced in this region, and Christians are victims of this fight to the death mentality. While the common people on all sides of the issues would like to live in peace, governments and revolutionaries would rather wage war. War is big business for nations such as ours and our tax money is funding all sides. Instead of protecting women and children, they are used as part of the war, usually as part of genocide of the future generation. Prayer and monetary support to the Latin Patriarch is needed now. We can't depend on our country to do the right thing. We can't even be sure what our country IS doing or who they are really supporting. We have to be the ones who do the right thing.

In addition to the good works of the EOHS, I would also recommend the Catholic Near East Welfare Association.
