Excellent points on Cuomo, and I particularly appreciate such a diversity of coverage The Pillar has provided this summer. Is a two month recess normal for Vatican criminal courts? That seems long, especially since I doubt they have a lot of other cases on the docket. I get that August is a vacation month for everyone (what a perk!) but what of September?

Your coverage is, as always, outstanding. I really appreciate your reflections on today's feast. You really nailed your analysis of the Cuomo situation. Don't forget too, that not only has Cuomo become a leader in the "culture of death," but he tried to profit off his "leadership" in the pandemic by quickly getting a book out. I was appalled when I saw that book, and that was before we knew the full extent of the nursing home deaths.

I have been reading about the travails of Governor Cuomo with the interest of a retired lawyer, & of a onetime candidate for elective office in local government.

What happened to the Presumption of Innocence? If there is sufficient evidence that Governor Cuomo has committed breaches of the criminal law, then he should have been charged & tried, and (if justified by the law & the evidence,— convicted).

That is what Courts are for, whether they be State or Federal : You know, —those funny, archaic bodies with Judges, Juries, & Lawyers. Instead, the New York Attorney General commissioned a report which has determined that Mr. Cuomo has broken state & federal law. So, no need for anything as bothersome and expensive as a criminal trial.

If criminal charges are initiated, as is currently being considered, then Governor Cuomo will undoubtedly claim that his right to a fair trial will have been compromised by the publication of this report & by the involvement of the State Attorney General in procuring that report. If such an argument were to be made , & to be made successfully, then the effect of the Attorney General’s extra Curial intervention would be to secure the acquittal of Governor Cuomo.

Public figures are entitled to the same protection by the criminal law as are “ordinary citizens “. Ask Cardinal Pell!

Didn’t want to bother JD or Ed with an email, but I have been wondering: Do you think Cardinal Becciu’s involvement in this trial is affecting any forward motion in the Causes of Saints? Or is that staffed by enough people/is such a tedious, long-term process that it doesn’t make too much of a difference?

Ya know, you guys should really plug the podcast more often in the newsletters. I know a podcast isn't the hard-hitting investigative journalism that the Pillar is most focused on, but the podcast is so valuable--it reveals a lot about the good intentions and clear eyes you guys bring to your projects, which is really rare and really important. Plus it's fun to listen to! Plug the podcast, often, so your readers know its out there and can benefit from it as much as I have.
