I really appreciate your explainers. They are really helpful as an adult convert to Catholicism. I especially liked the clarification about where this falls as a belief, dogma vs private revelation. Thanks!

According to the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception or the Divine Mercy boys, on DM Sunday we receive an extraordinary promise that is so great that it is compared to the grace of baptism. Father Seraphim Michalenko said it was like a second baptism because other than at the moment of our original baptism, our soul will never be cleaner.

Of course, this assumes that we fulfill the conditions gave Saint Faustina of confession and Holy Communion. On that day, Christ wipes away all sins and provides for the removal of all punishment due to sin (even for sins we forgot to confess, unlike a plenary indulgence). And this grace is fully effective even if our contrition is less than perfect, even if we don’t have perfect live, and even if we still struggle with some attachment to particular sins. That’s Divine Mercy for you!

So color me confused. I thought any time we went to confession our sins were forgiven. I was also taught that any venial sins which we truly forgot to confess were likewise forgiven. BTW, I am a cradle catholic with 12 years Catholic education so it was pretty well imprinted on me.

Please read Catechism of the Catholic Church #1472 and #1473. Part of which reads ..”every sin, even venial, entails an unhealthy attachment to creatures, which must be purified her in earth, or after death called Purgatory.” “The forgiveness of sins and restoration of communion with God entail the remission of eternal punishment of sin, but temporal punishment of sin remains. “

“A conversion which proceeds from a fervent charity can attain the complete purification of the sinner in such a way that no punishment would remain.” Let’s pray for this.
