I wish I could say I was shocked. But I can't. This is so typical now. Francis did something similar with Fr Grassi in Argentina, the defrocked Fr Inzoli of Rome, Bishop Barros of Chile, among others.
This is Francis. This is how he operates. This is who he defends. And it will not change.
The article on Father Imelda's dismissal states he was given the"initial management of the new stage of the Pontifical John Paul II Theological Institute."
If John Paul II or Benedict XVI were pope right now, the Zanchetta-Belda story and others like it would be in the mainstream media. Instead, this kind of thing is the exclusive purview of center-right outlets like The Pillar, NC Register and EWTN. The Winfields and Pullellae of the world are remarkably incurious about anything resembling bad judgment or corruption on the part of Pope Francis or his inner circle. Alas, the teflon exists for a reason. A pope who flirts with upsetting the apple cart on Catholic teaching on sexual morality and favors standing down in the culture wars over abortion, same-sex marriage, etc. is such a mind-blowing dream come true for the liberal establishment that the Holy Father has very clearly earned his free pass.
Unbelievable.

Forgive me, I thought the picture was of a man wearing Groucho glasses.
This is so on brand for Pope Francis you'd have to think it was trad satire.
But we trads could never craft a story this on the nose.
