This Tomasi character sounds like a real piece of work. What a mess. And to what end?

I'm sure the Holy Father will react positively to a personal appeal by a group of aristocratic knights defending their traditional legal prerogatives and trying to maintain a delicate balance between centuries of precedent and papal power.

That definitely doesn't sound like the kind of thing he would find incredibly exasperating and that would lead him to impulsive action to try to make the annoyance disappear.

Per the Pillar's own reporting, it seems extremely unclear who is acting for what motives in all of this.

Recall the purportedly more traditional Festing was pushed out by Boselager with the support of the Vatican back in 2017.

The constitutional reform process has largely been handled under Boselager's leadership, up until Tomasi was inserted into the affair.

The lieutant (Fra' Marco Luzzago), who appointed Sehnaoui, came to leadership in 2017, at the same time as Boselager, and has been lieutenant since 2020, meaning his term is expired if it is only for a year. Furthermore, he is Councillor of the Order of Malta’s Italian Association, whose president was invited by Tomasi.

So who actually represents a more traditional branch of the Order of Malta? It seems very unclear to me that it is Sehnaoui.

It is also unclear to me whether the Order of Malta has the necessary structure to act authoritatively on its own behalf, having no Grand Master since 2017, and with the Grand Chancellor (Boselager) removing himself from the process.
