I’m with you, Ed. Kate needs to stay out of sight until Easter, just as she announced months ago! Someone has to stand up to the public, egged on by social and cultural media, and stand BY what they originally announced. Caving to the mob with apologies, retractions, or coming out of one’s self-imposed exile too soon needs to stop. She can be our leader on that front. The whole thing has gotten out of hand. And I wish they’d just leave that nice lady alone!
Thank you for your article on St John Anne. I have always been mystified that a Christian nation, at any time, would think that this torture was acceptable. It was barbaric and I would expect something better for a Christ enlightened society. As for the Royals, thank you also. I keep wondering why a private surgery and the recovery is so inappropriately analyzed and why people seem to have a seriously uncompassionate concern for a woman's well being. God be with you all.
I have to admit, I was one of those crass Americans excited for the Pillar’s own American Brit to address the “Kate-gate” kerfuffle. I hold every good will for the good health and speedy recovery of the Princess, but I did find the Palace’s attempts to address the situation hilariously inept, and in fact if anything was going to convince people something was seriously wrong with her it would be that photo and the absurdly fake “oh sorry, fam, I was just editing in my spare time,” message supposedly from Catherine. In any case, I will be praying for her recovery and for William and her poor kiddos- having mom (and grandpa/king!) sick is hard enough without the whole world feverishly chiming in.
Good post. Synodality silliness (really, who cares?) and the royals. I saw that pic and immediately knew it was off but I was amazed at the theories abounding in the rabbit hole I then encountered. There are only two reasons for an absence that long for surgery, neither of them pleasant and she should have some privacy for that. But William is an idiot - only one person could have permitted that photo to go out and I really doubt it was her. Shame.
Putting the three things together it get it. John Anne was not, (Never) a woman Neither I think was JMystic ulian of Norwich a Man I wa sinstructed.. --> With the Mardi Gras decorations, I'm wondering whether or not JD was really on the balcony of a Bourbon Street B&B. As that's a microphone in his hand, and not a Pat O's hurricane, I guess probably not.
--> Whoever did that Royal Family photoshop was either a lousy amateur or someone who was trying to set up Kate for some reason. I can't believe that a lousy amateur was allowed to produce the photo; so, I'm left to believe it was a set up. But, really, I don't care enough to wonder why.
Thanks for the interesting piece on "John Anne"... the years of Tudor and Stuart persecution of the Church are such a fascinating period... tragedy mixed with heroism. Sadly, the English martyrs must be rolling in their graves when the Anglican "episcopacy" is now welcomed to the altars of Rome to perform their heretical services.
I, like any self respecting American (other that my wife and most of the people I know), react to any news of the English royal family by tossing tea into the largest body of water i happen to be around.
If the interpretation given here of the Synod is correct, it resembles more an ecumenical Council. It would have been more honest to just call Vatican III rather than all this rigamarole. It might have been cheaper, to boot.
But seriously, I'm of two minds in all this. On the one hand, I appreciate the need to broach controversial topics and work through them. If there are lingering, major disagreements, then let's all just put these to rest and move on. On the other hand, haven't all of the neuralgic issues being discussed already been decided in a way equivalent to how the Synod will be decided, i.e. by the Pope? What does all of this achieve that couldn't be achieved before?
All of these discussions of the Synod seem like so much smoke and mirrors for a Pope to eventually say, "We've listened, and now we've decided." Great. But what have the Pope's since Vatican II been doing? Not listening, not thinking through these things with input from the universal Church, etc.? The Synod communicates a repudiation of the last 60+ years of detailed clarifications from the Vatican, setting the whole Church back that many years.
The great tragedy of the Synod might really be that it has opened up the possibility of every future Pope now saying, "It's 1965 again, and I have a mandate of clarifying with a clean slate." We can never move on: it's ecclesial Groundhog's Day. Will we ever have an actual Ecumenical Council again?
Ed, I hope I have this right, but from what you've described, I understand the royals to be like a british knockoff of Arrested Development? Am I understanding that right? I don't know the name of this show, or where you're watching it. Sounds like good background noise though.
I've always considered the Royals to be nothing more than a British soap opera at this point, but I think I like Arrested Development knock off better hahah.
You know you read the Pillar when your first thought with more synod-y stuff was “how can the Vatican afford all this? Aren’t they basically broke or something?”
“Well, she's never in the way
Always something nice to say, oh what a blessing
…
She knows what I'm about
She can take what I dish out, and that's not easy
She knows me through and through
And she knows just what to do, and how to please me”
Ah, the Randy One, sitting pretty on the Pillar
Mulieris Dignitatem it ain’t…
I like the new mitre. Very chic.
I, for one, welcome our new papal overlord.
Thank you for the note of restraint on Fr DeOreo and his diocese--even people on here seem to jump all over stories as soon as they break.
I think you meant “reversing the country’s legal restrictions on abortion,” not “protections for”?
Indeed I did! A writer and three editors and we all missed it. Thanks for flagging

Francis both hints at all the work that a futureJohn XXIV will have to do but also assures he is robust and has many more projects to accomplish.
Of course, the first is belied by the fact that he keeps on keeping on, publishing documents with fervor. But the second is belied by his sickliness.
We shall see if Ed’s interpretation of the never ending synod are right soon enough.

other minor typos too but you get the gist

My attitude entirely.
