So long as people think that the point of life is to enjoy it, the arguments about abortion come down to a competition between mother and child and their respective rights to pursue happiness.

If the point of life is to love, then everything that is not an act of love is a sin. The pursuit of loving is so superior to the pursuit of happiness.

On August 25, 2022, Tennessee’s trigger abortion law will go into effect. It forbids abortion and makes no exception for incest, rape, child abuse nor the life of the mother. In my 30s, the mother of a small child, I had two miscarriages, resulting in a D&C to ensure I did not develop sepsis and die. I wanted more children and deeply love the one I have. Today I would very likely be told to go home and hope for a complete abortion and that I would not die from infection. There is no way to distinguish an involuntary abortion from a voluntary one.

You can say resolving an ectopic pregnancy is not an abortion. But until there is a nationwide acceptance of a new vocabulary, it is. It has become crystal clear to me that my life as a woman counts for nothing, even considering the small child and husband I would have left behind. My experience of being Of lesser importance in my church and of no importance in my state is devastating.
