It is very strange to say that theology will never be the same. As if this didn't happen 30 years ago in Yugoslavia, a near neighbor to Ukraine. Or as if it isn't happening right now in many other countries around the world. Better to say: any theology that has nothing to say about this kind of evil needs to be thrown away. But traditional Catholic theology has plenty to say about Bucha and suffering and evil. It is only those who have forgotten the Cross who are confused. "Weep for your children, for if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

Christ Jesus, our Lord, who suffered torture and execution despite your innocence, draw near to Ukraine. Our Lady of Sorrows, be a Mother to them now.

Caryll Houselander's "This War is the Passion," also published more recently by Sophia Institute Press as "The Passion of the Infant Christ," has helped me make some sense of this horrible war.

May we never doubt God's goodness, His care, or His deep unity with those who suffer. Father, spare us everything You can.
