This is monstrous. To have abused so many and for so long with so many people being aware and having failed to stop him are sins that cry out to heaven.

What the hell is wrong with the Society of Jesus?

How does the Church even begin to fix this issue when it’s clear abusers and those who tolerate abuse are in positions of power everywhere?

We ought to pray 1. for the victims and their families and friends and for anyone whose faith is shaken (which I think is bound to be a lot of people); 2. that the enablers repented before they died (or, if still living, that they repent and lead a life of prayer and penance); 3. that by some miracle of grace the abuser accepted responsibility for his actions and repented of them before he died; 4. that other abusers and enablers in the Church, who are still alive, repent and place themselves in a situation where they no longer have opportunity (a brief look at the diary shows the futility of merely resolving not to fall again). Those of us who believe that it is possible to go to hell (which I think is the majority of readers) ought to not desire anyone to go there and ought to pray for final perseverance ourselves.

This is all so messed up...everything about this situation. And please don't refer to his "ministry" or his "lover". Let's use the words and descriptions our grandfathers would have used.

Incredibly disturbing and enraging story. Thank you for covering it.

"After he attempted to report what he learned from his uncle’s diary to Jesuit superiors, the priest’s nephew told El Pais that he was not given any update or information on a possible investigation, prompting him to go to the press."

This is a strong piece of evidence for one of the main conclusions that I drew from my reading about the McCarrick case: Going to the press is basically the only way to prompt action.

"Vos Estis" is nice and all but if you want results, GO TO THE PRESS.

Interestingly , there was little said about his obvious disparagement of Catholics. The Church is held in low repute . Why?
