Paying ransoms to terrorists is EXACTLY what I have long suspected was the reason for some of the financial secrecy. I don't think it was an isolated case. I think this is a very, very tough call.

The picture that’s emerging here is not so much one of carefully crafted malice and embezzlement, but rather complete financial and managerial incompetence, coupled with a drama-queen attitude.

Becciu was given 1 million euros to secure the release of a religious sister. Gives the money to Marogna for some reason, who seems to be an unnecessary middle man, because she then gave the money to some London based group (that does what exactly?). And apparently none of it actually does the job, because Italian forces deny that the Vatican had any part in it.

And it doesn’t just seem to be Becciu, but Perlasca and Parolin too, if not others. It doesn’t seem like any of them should be allowed to manage money at all, but here we are.

What strikes me is the extraordinary lack of transparency. Apparently this is all in the hands of a handful of odd, unstable, and compromised people
