That last paragraph is a doozy!

Just another kind invitation to DO EXACTLY WHAT WE TELL YOU WHEN WE TELL YOU TO DO IT and perhaps if you are docile and gentle enough we will let you have elections again. These new tyrants add insult to injury: while they rule with an iron fist they also blame you for making them take such extreme measures.

Anybody else read that and say "I have no idea what the actual conflict is all about"? A lot of buzz words that don't say much of anything (by that I mean the statements of CL and the Vatican not the Pillar).

Thank you for including the fact that Cardinal Farrell is deeply linked to McCarrick and Maciel. It must never be forgotten how incredibly compromised these men are lest we take them at their word.

I'm a part of CL and felt like I had to comment on this article.

To make a long story short... First, there are no 'senior members' of CL, its a lay movement.

Second, most people welcome these changes. What took place was a weird cult like following of Fr. Carron, with a large part of the leadership insisting he was the 'vessel of the charism'. Like he had some divine mandate and only he could speak on matters of 'the charism' with authority. It was weird and ultimately just seemed like, they liked being in control. For instance, we were supposed to have elections for the local diocesan leaders, but the US 'responsible' (as they are known) would intervene and 'suggest' who we all should vote for. Of course, that person would be elected. The Church is saying that type of stuff is bad - the vote should be free.

But now of course they are fighting tooth and nail to subvert the message of the Church , largely through telling people this is not what Fr. Giussani would have wanted and emphasizing conflict with Pope Francis. Its pitiful since CL really has some wonderful aspects. But if you strip away the religious dimension ('charism', 'movement') its really just a power struggle.

Spelling error in a couple places-- "Guissani."

It seems like the pattern that's emerging is, when a Catholic organization has internal divisions but is willing to actually obey the Vatican, then the Vatican takes over management for an indefinite period of time. Will this improve matters within the organizations? I guess it depends on how bad they were internally before, but from the outside, it does not seem like the intervention is going smoothly for the Knights of Malta.

I find myself wondering what would have happened if the apostolic visitation of women's religious orders had taken this kind of a turn.

This article would be much more insightful if it had more details about "what happened," rather than "what people have said"

The reader is currently left with little material to evaluate for themselves beyond their preconceived notions of who the "good guys" and "bad guys" are.

I think the Vatican has become wary of a Cult of Personality within these movements. That’s what I read between the lines and one of the commenters seemed to confirm. Whether this is the way to handle it is a different point. But at least the Vatican is paying attention in early stages unlike the Legionnaires
