Is he a holy man? (This is orthogonal to whether someone would be a good Pope or whether someone is a good administrator, but it is the sort of thing I think about.)

Despite his other shortcomings, if he is orthodox with regards to doctrine, I would take him over Pope Francis or a score of others that he has made cardinals in the last decade. Even if other bad policies, like the China deal, continue, at least we might have an end to these endless debates about homosexuality, women deacons, etc. Though I'm still skeptical that we get someone even moderately conservative as the next Pope given the current makeup of the College of Cardinals, and the fact that Pope Francis doesn't seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, meaning that he probably still has a lot more Cardinals to appoint in the future.
