Pivot to video:

Somebody queue up "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles!

Y'all, with all due respect to Kate, please never turn this into a video podcast. That would be so tedious and tiring- there's already too many, YouTube is saturated with them. And then that puts you on the video production treadmill - having yo upgrade camera, lighting, build a podcast set for each of you, do video editing, and all the rest. Not to mention the uphill battle of appeasing the ever-changing algorithm.

Podcasts are for listening to while I'm doing something else,

- driving, laundry, cooking, etc. I can't speak for anyone else, but often I find that a video component makes the podcast worse - if it's there, distracts me from whatever else I was trying to do.

Plus, I like the fact that the Pillar is still essentially just print and radio. There's a charm to it that you'd lose instantly if you moved to TV.

I definitely agree that The Pillar Podcast is best consumed simply via audio. I also understand your desire to keep anyone from getting sucked into the YouTube algorithm’s demands. It must be a huge drain in time and energy for anyone who doesn’t have a competent production team behind them.

*But* I think what Kate, Ed, and JD have proposed (releasing shortened clips of the full show, not the whole thing(if I understood that correctly)) could be a good way to get them out there a little more. It’s a different market that could expand their audience and make them more recognizable in the world of Catholic journalism. I would only become unsupportive if YouTube became a distraction for The Pillar team from spending time on the real journalism we’re all here for.

Speaking of which, thanks for the panda talk, fellas!

I'm never 100% sure if JD is having Ed. (and us) on when he talks as if either he doesn't know who someone is or talks as if there is a way Ed. somehow doesn't know who someone is. This is especially true about people who have an outsized online presence, as if we aren't *all* chronically online.

Also, I love when Ed. Just unilaterally decides something generally well liked or beloved is actually awful and should be shunned. Who doesn't like pandas??? It would serve him right if his daughter decided that, in addition to dressage, pandas were her life's work and she worked to preserve them.

Just my two cents, but to weigh in on comments about the movie The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance…

I have actually seen it, twice at least…it is a great film! However, I have no recollection of the quote used by Ed as standing out in the film…so, anecdotally a mixed bag perhaps.

Also, I don’t have strong feelings one way or another about video podcasts, but I always am listening while commuting…washing dishes, laundry, mowing the lawn, etc. So, personally I would not likely ever watch a video portion of it.

Always fun and interesting listening folks!

It's interesting how differently the hot-mic in a room full of recording devices is handled by staff of the Holy See vs the American head of state.

Many of the podcasts I listen to have started to include video content as well. If it's an old enough production, it starts with just uploading the audio podcast to Youtube. Then they start getting recorded and uploaded as video, with audio still shared via the usual podcast channels. Eventually clips/shorts/reels/etc are made out of the long-form video to generate additional interest. While I encounter these on Youtube, it hasn't changed my preferred listening format...ye good ole' podcast.

A good podcaster will remember that any video content is a supplement to the audio and not push it excessively. The main downside is the frequent request to go like-subscribe-share; if you have to add these one day try to time them to 30s long so that my "skip ahead" button can breeze right past.

If I understand Kate correctly and that y'all would be putting out short video clips and not full length video podcasts -- I think that's a good idea. I hate how the Internet has devolved into a formless mass of tik toks and hot takes, but it is convenient for getting exposure out there. There are lots of times where I'm listening and say, "this was a good perspective on this important event in the life of the church" but in conversation with others I can't just say "hey this podcast brought up a good point on this topic, you should listen to it" -- because people would eventually stop talking to me. But sending a 30 second clip to a friend over text, that's going to be more socially acceptable.

If video is a problem, I've also seen this done where it just has audio and the video portion is just e.g a logo and an audio waveform to add some motion, maybe subtitles. Or just brief shots of Ed or JD's talking head cutting to topical stock footage. There are lots of ways to make it work.

FWIW I only know who Joe Rogan is because he pops up when I'm trapped scrolling through YouTube Shorts.
