"We've already been doing <insert liturgical novelty> for a long time in this church/diocese/country/region" seems kind of the go-to strategy to gain indults and wider acceptance.

This is a good reminder that when all of us pray this week for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit that we also need to pray fervently "that my heart will be open to what the Holy Spirit wants to do in it", because the kingdom of God (as we see in the reading from Acts for the ascension ) is very different from "what I would do if I were God"; it is much better than what I would do, but because it is so very different, it is a *death* to what I wanted and expected, and if I cling to my own plan there is a risk that I will reject the better (and very different) one that is offered to me. And because it is a gift, it is possible to reject, or to set the box aside in disappointment and only recognize many years later (while cleaning) that it contains a great treasure. It is hard to accept a death of one's own plans, and so we should pray for one another to receive the grace to let go of them before they start to smell bad. Perhaps if the bishop reads the Pillar he will pray also for me.
