"You do not have to be either for or against this new vision to appreciate its significance." I guess not, but we all should realize that this rescript does not reflect the thought of the Vatican II docs, LG or CD. It is strange that we only heard recently there are vast pockets of anti-Vatican II folk in the US and now we see decisions directly contradicting the letter and spirit of the Council from the person who made that accusation.

I am fascinated by the comments on the governance of the church.in my dwindling 78 year memory I believe Jesus said,”you are Peter ( now Francis) and upon this rock I will build MY church. I also respond to the fact that at the Last Supper,Jesus said, “Do this in memory of ME”. That is passed down through the ages because He says take and eat ALL of you. The governance of our present day church would be best served if it reflected the church of 2022. The laity are called to a more active voice and participation but they don’t hear or know of it because it is silenced or kept under wraps by those who fear their power and control will be affected. Jesus was not about power or control but about mercy,love,forgiveness,acceptance- the direct antithesis of what our governance exhibits today. May the Spirit fill this void with humble, laity willing to take Jesus’ invitation to come follow HIM.

I find it very interesting what gets various people worked up about Pope Francis. Within this single papacy he has seriously changed (some might say undermined) the Church's understanding of its moral theology (Amoris and subsequent destruction of the JPII institute), it's liturgical life (Traditionis Custodes and other discouragement of anything seen as traditional) and now it's governance. It's been a complete upheaval of the life of the Church. Clearly Ed and JD are most enamored by law and governance (which makes perfect sense).

One thing is certain - this pope doesn't feel bound by what has come before him in virtually any arena - including Vatican II

Pope Francis disturbs me. Synodality is used for the groups pushing agendas like same sex unions, women’s ordination, etc. But the papal hand comes down heavily on those who prefer Latin Masses or celibacy for priests or marriage as defined by God. His criticism of groups in the Church that he does not like are mean. He has sown confusion. His way of governance should not be surprising. Nothing he does now is surprising. He is a man of disunity.

This is old news. I had thought it clear in 2017 when Pope Francis reinstated the order’s Grand Chancellor ( Albrecht von Boeselager) who had been removed by Grand Master Fra Matthew Fessling and then sacked Fessling that the orders “ sovereignty “ was fictional in the eyes of the Vatican. Todays events are simply confirmatory. Does this action threaten the Vatican’s own sovereignty? Hardly.

I found the first item of interest. The ownership of the churches. When you donate money to build a church. you expect the structure to be there for your children and grandchildren.. And then it has to be auctioned off to pay off the sins of the "people who should have known better". Since the church members paid for the church, why should they be forced to pay for the" sins of the "people that should have known better"? Since Rome appoints these people, Rome should flip the tab. Why should parishioners need to pay for the same church twice?

As someone said recently, "Historians tell us that it takes 100 years for a Council to be applied." As Vatican II was a correction to the ultramontanism of Vatican I, it will take time for that to happen. Having a saint philosopher pope and a theologian pope was nice, but it tended to contribute to the idea of the pope as the embodiment of the church. Perhaps the next pope will be chosen based on humility, on not being a worldwide celebrity or a micromanager.

Let’s pray for priests, especially in light of the LGBT+ “Wedding-thing” that happened in Italy earlier today.

Excellent read on the current situations

While on the other side of the theological spectrum, Pius IX would be very impressed by the actions of the present bishop of Rome. The Church is truly a monarchy centered on the pope. All other bishops are his vicars. We just don't speak these truths.

I think that quite a few dioceses are still set up like yours.
