Oh boy…. Suppose the question is was there anything he needed cash for that precipitated the theft? A mistress/mister? Blackmail? Bad gambling habit? Anything?

I really hope his Bishop throws the book at him. He’s stealing from his children.

He moved $24,000 from parish accounts to his fake charity. The Diocese of Des Monies allows pastors to spend $25,000 without the consent of the parish Finance Council.

It is also curious that he was a seminary president for the Claretians, a fairly responsible position. He left that post and left his order, becoming the pastor of two rural parishes on the other side of the globe. I would think there is more to this story. Maybe we have finally found an immigrant who was not properly vetted.

And lastly, I'm not sure Professor Warren is correct that "the parish could have required a corporate resolution from the finance committee before cashing the CDs, or instructed the bank to not cash the CDs without the signature of both the pastor and a finance committee member.” I don't see anything that gives the laity of the parish that ability, however wise it might be that we laity do have such authority.
