Did The Pillar specifically ask the AG's office if there were any statutory or judicially imposed restrictions that limit/prohibit Newark and/or Metuchen from releasing said records? This should be a simple matter of providing a citation from the law or a related judicial order. And in the absence of either of these legal justifications, Tobin should be pressed for an answer. I suspect that the real answer is that diocesan legal counsel has advised against it because it will make all involved look bad. Sadly, bad news does not get better with age and there has been NOTHING but bad news associated with Mr. McCarrick and his enablers--including Cardinal Tobin.
