The cardinal provides a florid description of the charges against him. I have only followed this story through "The Pillar" which is far from “violent and vulgar campaign”, but very measured and informative.

Perhaps cardinals should expect some media attention if they are ever charged with a crime. Look at the disgrace that was the trial of Cardinal George Pell in Australia. On the sitting days of the trial, the Victorian Supreme Court required a large police presence due to the very hostile crowd that had gathered to "protest" in the streets. Several police members received serious injuries due to the behaviour of the crowd. I am sure that the Cardinal would have been severely injured or worse had the mob managed to get their hands on him.

When the exoneration came, a full riot was averted due to the country being in a coronavirus lockdown and the judgement being broadcast a long way from Melbourne.
