As Reagan said, “Trust but verify.” The Pillar is doing the “verify” so they can use our support.

A "sterling reputation on financial reform"? Do you read your own reporting?

Yes. The pope has done more to address financial reform in the Curia than has been done in a long time. That’s what we’re having a trial.

Whatever else can be said about Francis, the pope has been at Curial financial reform for quite some time.

My point is not to defend the state of curial finances. It’s to say that Francis is regarded as having worked to begin the process of reform. If you think we overstated that, we’ll give that some thought.

"That's why we're having a trial." For financial corruption. Yes, now I see. Except for all the all the financial corruption, the financial reform is going splendidly. Sorry, we're not going to agree on this one. Anyway, I do love your reporting though. Keep up the good work.

I suppose cancelling an independent audit because the auditors asked too many questions is an example of reforming the financial systems in the Vatican so that they work in the way he would like them to work.

fair point. It was Becciu who did that, and the Holy Father who backed him up, but perhaps "sterling" is a bit more than is fair.
