I do wonder if people realize that not all saint/religious films are low-budget, high-cheese projects destined for EWTN reruns? What about "A Man for All Seasons"? or "The Song of Bernadette"? Gregory Peck received an Academy Award for Best Actor in "The Keys of the Kingdom"? For more recent films, what about "A Hidden Life" which tells the story of Bl. Franz Jägerstätter? Or "Of Gods and Men" tells the true story of Cistercian monks who were martyred in Algeria in 1996? Sometimes I think we accept sub-par movies because of a (false) narrative that exists around Christian films. There are some truly excellent ones, in my opinion, which have moved the hearts of believers and non-believers alike.

It's weird, you know, the writer's comment that it was a movie about an amazing woman who happened to be a nun, and I bet that to a lot of people, that's what the saints are--great people who would have been great no matter what they did. Kind of like if Michael Jordan had chosen baseball over basketball early in life, St. Francis would have become a great wool-trader or something. I.e. he was already great and just chose religious life as an outlet for whatever light was already in him.

I'd bet that most religious (and maybe every one that attained sainthood) would have said that they were a pretty wretched person to start with and wouldn't have amounted to very much if they hadn't been transformed through the cross of their habit.
