In reference to the discussion of the “cognitive shift” experienced often by space travelers, I experienced the same type of shift on viewing the IMAX presentation of the repair of the Hubble telescope at Kennedy Space Center a number of years ago. After the documentary portion, the film shows clips of the universe in the typical quarter-sphere projection. I was giddy with the realization of the immensity and the grandeur of God whose design set all this in motion. “What is man that thou art mindful of him?” I carry it with me to this day.
What a beautiful reflection on the "overview effect" Ed...it's no coincidence that today is the feast of St Hildegard who had a similar vision of the entire universe as an tiny egg being sustained by the burning love of Holy Trinity
