One of Garvey’s key initiatives was building up the university’s fundraising, more in line with similar institutions instead of being very reliant on the national collection for the university. Some of that fundraising rankled “the left” in the Church as it came from people like the Koch brothers (you can read Michael Sean Winter’s blistering criticism at another Catholic outlet), although it also includes a lot of money from the Conways, a couple primarily interested in the (very good) nursing school. I am quite confident that fundraising ability-which ties very much into an ability not to offend-is close to the top of the job description for Garvey’s replacement.
