New drinking game just dropped: "being Church" (being bride of Christ) = read three verses from Song of Songs (put a Post It flag in the margin and move it along)... "synodality" = one verse; "walking together" = two verses. If you wind up en la interior bodega and lose the herd you were following you win the game.

Yes, not being a canonist this all makes sense as explained.
I hope though the Sisters (and those who left the Community) are being given proper care and help as justice demands.
But no word on the plight of these women.
Quite common when a cleric, seminarian or Religious is abused.
Often those who have been offended against and wounded among clergy, seminarians and Religious are left to carry their “cross of abuse” in silence, shame and anxiety. It must be considered part of the vow or promise of obedience.
“Shut up and bear it. This is part of your Via Dolorosa. Don’t make the Church look bad.”
How good some of us are at “spiritualizing” evil acts involving sexual sins against women and men of the Church. These poor people who have been wounded by the very ones they might have looked to for accompaniment, paternal care and as examples.
Were any of “Uncle Ted’s” priestly or seminarian victims given any care?
I hope so…but how far we have come from, “Bear one another’s burdens…”
Look in part we don’t hear much from victims because we do want to protect their privacy and ability to move on. No one wants their name googled to find SO AND SO, VICTIM OF X BASTARD’ and they don’t want this evil to define them. Victims deserve that chance to be a regular person. Abusers should have their actions haunt them.
"As JD notes, *despite* McCarrick’s reputation for gift-giving and financial largesse, and his cultivation of a deep and wide network of friends and proteges throughout the Church, “no living contemporaries of the former cardinal have faced consequences for the prospect of having looked the other way.” "
Since it is a Friday newsletter and "despite" is evidently not in the direct quote of JD (or even if it is), I am willing to envision a deadpan delivery of extremely dry humor.
Ed, don't worry about the Saudis buying the Cubs. There are many other mediocre baseball teams to choose from. The A's may be on the auction block at a fire sale price.
The snarky description of golf and golfing comes across as shallow, angry and less than charitable caricature. I would have liked to see a reference backing up the assertion about “fried chicken” and a black man winning a tournament. Who said that? Allow me another perspective. Golf gives many people a chance to get outdoors, walk in beautiful nature, get away from their fears and anxieties and sorrows. My grandfather was born of a humble immigrant family and belonged to no country club. Yet he taught himself to play and became a scratch golfer. And he passed down a love of the game to his son, my father, and then to me. These caricatures do not speak to the thousands upon thousands of men and women, not born with a silver spoon in their mouth, who appreciate the ability get outside and enjoy the grandeur of this world that God has created for us while relaxing with friends and exercising their minds and bodies. I know the pastime has helped me cope with everything from stillbirth of our first child to the death of my parents to myriad other sorrows this live can throw at us. Maybe reflect more thoughtfully about something that gives a lot of people some peace and a fleeting moment of joy. I know you were going after the big money people but maybe reflect that not everyone who plays golf is a Saudi billionaire or whatever.
Agreed, as another non country club, non privileged golfer the whole newsletter was sunk for me by the quite rude treatment of a sport I love to play that raises quie a sum for many KofC chapters.
~Saudi~ shekel . . .
Say what?
Ed, thank you for your commentary on LIV/PGA. I just don’t understand why people care so much. You put why I don’t do succinctly.
Saudis owning the Cubs--would that make Ed hate MLB even more?? Is that possible?
What is Saudi just owned MLB itself?
Well, I bet they wouldn't allow "pride" events. BUT that wouldn't make their ownership any more palatable!

The synod process/lazy river comparison killed me. Top form Ed.
Yes, top form!
So, what you're saying is, the real synod is the friends we made along the way.
I think writing it as PGA-LIV works better. At least, it flows more easily in speech as “puh-GAL-iv”. And also sounds a little bit goofy.
I think the other way sounds goofy as well: "Live Poogah".

The Rupnik mess…

Good newsletter, though now all I see in my mind’s eye is Shane O Mac walking out to the ring.
I found this a very interesting angle to the Pope's push on synodality: https://wherepeteris.com/how-latin-american-synodality-shaped-franciss-vision/
I would seriously consider changing the expression “Saudi shekel”.

Not *due to*?
Exactly.

The Synod on Synodality: The Lazy River That Never Ends.
Ed, don't worry about the Saudis buying the Cubs. There are many other mediocre baseball teams to choose from. The A's may be on the auction block at a fire sale price.
"And, like a synodal address, the lazy river is perhaps best approached and appreciated after several drinks. " this line killed
