This attitude comes out of the heresy of universalism. If there is no Hell, then the merciful thing is to be reasonable. If Hell exists, then absolutes exist.

Some try to play around with universalism by say that Hell exists but perhaps it is empty. This does not solve the problem, but it makes "merciful exceptions to moral absolutes" couched in similarly wishy-washy language.

Do not dare to hope all men be saved. If you dare to hope such a thing, your hope is not based in revelation but in the devil. For it is the devil who first said, "You will not surely die" and made Eve hope that in certain circumstances eating the fruit could be justifiable.
