It reminds me of the flack that Pope Pius XII received and continues to receive for his approach to the Nazi's in WWII. He might never be canonized for it but he certainly oversaw a massive Catholic underground that saved hundreds of thousands of Jewish people. This is publicly recognized by the Jews. When you deal with insane, brutal dictators, you have to think outside the box.

I mean, this makes a heck of a lot of sense. The Pope can find track two channels to communicate his support for a persecuted church without necessarily publicly antagonising a violent autocrat. We are called to be martyrs ourselves, not get other people martyred.
