"Let his baseball ghost wander an Iowa cornfield forever, along with the likes of Joe Jackson, dragging his gambling gains and losses behind him, strung out on a chain forged of his many lies, like a sporting Jacob Marley, as a warning to all others who come after."

This is the most beautifully overdramatic piece of writing I have seen in a long time.

I think Miss Condon is exerting control in one of the few ways she has available to her at her age and with the resources she has.

I am interested in the polygamy question because it seems to me that we have a related issue in the west: in a culture where sequential marriage is completed accepted, even by Christians in other communities, how do we sort out which wife is the "real" one? I know the answer on paper, but I struggle with the Church's position that a man's first wife, whom he married at 18 and had 4 terrible months with before divorcing and marrying his second wife, with whom he had a loving and fruitful relationship for 60 years, has precedence.

I was raised Protestant, and absolutely no one I knew believed in the permanence of marriage the way the Church defines it. If any of them became Catholic, they would be in a very similar position to Africans in polygamous marriages: dealing with the conflict between what the Church requires of them, and something that is foundational to the way they (and everyone around them) lives their lives.

Again, I would like to stress that I know the Church's position (something I researched in depth before converting...), but struggle with the practical application. I would greatly appreciate an in-depth pastoral answer to the question of multiple spouses, whether polygamous (Africa) or sequential (the West).
