> In practice, a person who can’t receive a low-gluten host should simply not receive the host during Mass, and then get into line for the chalice.

If someone is that gluten intolerant, I would imagine that they would want to receive from a separate chalice (from which the line of people who just had gluten in their mouth have not been drinking); this is how I have seen it done but yes it does require advance discussion.

Thank you for this explainer!

I knew about the grape juice ‘substitution’ but didn’t realise that non-wheat hosts were also a thing. Reminds me of a Mexican Goverment sponsored trade union in the 1930s trying to start a ‘Mexican Church’ with tortillas and mezcal instead of bread and wine. It was laughed out of the building.

I’ve never understood the ‘grape juice is just as good as wine’ argument. It’s not like Jesus didn’t have access to grape juice, if he meant to use grape juice at the last supper he could have! It is good that the church in her mercy has come up with a solution for priests and parishioners who cannot consume alcohol. Many remote Aboriginal communities are dry for good reason.
