“ In fact, he’s gone so far as to file suit against journalists who, he claims, have compromised his ability to someday be elected pope.”

That says more than enough about Becciu. In my opinion and experience people who grasp at and seek after power should never be given power. Especially in the Church. It’s the antithesis of the Gospel and Christ who, “though he was in the form of God” surrendered all power.

I am imagining the Pope washing the feet of Becciu, not unlike Christ washing Judas’ feet. Powerful.

Great reporting as always. Could you clarify if the state even has authority over the Church's liturgical practices? Of course the state can say something is unlawful (like a priest saying Mass during many times of persecution) but this isn't a legitimate order as the authority over whether and how liturgical practices proceed lies with the bishop.

I will be open to accepting the Pillar’s spin when Francis cancels his public Mass for Pentecost in order to say a private Mass in Cardinal Pell’s apartment. A cardinal who has suffered imprisonment on false charges seems to be on the periphery.
