I have not been unable to understand the hostility of the Church hierarchy toward the Latin Mass. We complain about people leaving the Church and not believing in the Real Presence in the Eucharist. In my opinion, if people want to attend a Latin Mass, encourage it!

Ed, I'd like to personally address your statement: "Because if the extraordinary form of the liturgy is about anything, it's about the aesthetics — right?" Forgive me, but unless you were being facetious, how could you, and a journalist to boot, so badly misapprehend the importance of the TLM? The central concern among those devoted to the TLM, among whom I recently count myself, is not that the Novus Ordo isn't "beautiful enough" or otherwise aesthetically lacking (although this may also be true), but that it doesn't come close, no matter how reverently conducted, of imparting the correct reverence for the Eucharist, or of rightly preparing the Communicant for the Eucharist.

Over the past few years, as I continued to pursue deeper spiritual and intellectual understanding of the Real Presence in the Eucharist, I experienced a growing discomfort with even the most reverent NO Mass at my parish (although at first I didn't see the connection). This led me to seek out a TLM parish, and by the end of that first Mass I was profoundly attached to the TLM. Not because it was "more beautiful" - I believe that term is careless shorthand for something deeper and more profound. Perhaps there is no word for the incredible sense of justice, of correct reverence for the Eucharist, and for the connection to God and His Church that the TLM imparted to me that day (and every Mass since). Ed, never before in my life have I experienced a thrill in the pit of my stomach just before receiving Communion. Before that first Mass, I had no contact with "Trads", no reading of Traditionalist sites or other preparation for that experience, other than a vague understanding (from sites like yours) that the TLM was allegedly more reverent. I brought my family (amid much grumbling) to the same parish for a TLM a few weeks later, without explaining my own experience. Afterward, my wife, young adult son and daughter each approached me separately and, very earnestly, informed me that there was no longer any other Mass for them but the TLM. "Aesthetics", indeed.

Contrasting this experience with your past remarks about the TLM, it isn't surprising to learn that Tuesday's was your first. I earnestly urge that you attend a TLM more often (preferably in a plain-looking church, and when you're not busy being a journalist!), so you can honestly discern for yourself.
