So if a bishop cannot accuse another bishop of heresy, then how does that place Augustine with Donatism or Athanasius and Arianism? How do you understand Paul rebuking Peter (perhaps that was not heresy). I’m confused.

Could you unpack this a little more?

"Those doctrines which the Church doesn’t teach as being definitive still must be given “a religious submission of intellect and will,” even if Catholics are required to believe them."

How is this different from "believe and hold"? If they're not taught definitively, how are they taught? What are some examples? Are these things that might not be true? If so why are Catholics required to believe them?

Maybe Pope Francis’ silence on this kind of thing is by God’s will (for a more advantageously times purpose). It’s hard from my view to see it that way, but I really want to have faith in that (man is this tough).

Thanks for laying out what constitutes formal heresy. The word is guilty of being overused to the point of losing its meaning. However, we shouldn't be afraid to call this what it is: grave scandal.

To my knowledge, the Catholic Church has never approved sodomy or other homosexual acts. Marx can't overturn 2000 years of Christian teaching, nor can he simply jettison basic Biblical teachings that are even more ancient. On the other hand, whose duty is it to formally correct a Cardinal of the Catholic Church? The Bishop of Rome, obviously. But I'm not holding my breath. Going all back to the "who am I to judge?" comment, it's been pretty obvious that this pontificate has opted to "stand down" in the culture war over the issue of homosexuality. Ultimately, though, they can't square the circle. The proper use of human sexuality is either ordered for procreation and family or it's not. I don't know how the Church doesn't end up in schism if Marx's view prevails. Many will ask ourselves if we can remain in a Catholic Church that abandons two millennia of teaching on human sexuality.

I do wish that Cardinal (Karl) Marx, the rest of the German bishops, and Fr. James Martin would just go and start their own church and leave the rest of us alone. IMHO, they should all be excommunicated, for starts. Nic V's post is correct that this is grave scandal, and it continues.

In 75 years of life I have never been more ashamed at what comes out of the mouths of some clergy. No the catechism isn’t written in stone but for Catholics the Bible is. So homosexual behavior and fornication are not considered grave sin to some of the Churches highest clergy? I am just so ashamed of the German Catholic leaders. What a terrible price they will pay if their hearts are not turned back to the teachings of the Church and Scripture. The judgement of God has started in the house of God and WOW is God shaking His house.
