Great episode. Two thoughts. First, as a resident of the Archdiocese of Detroit, knowing the reason for Bishop M’s move...would certainly be nice. Second, re: openness and clarity. Borrowing from Aristotle, you need to overbend the stick when correcting for a vice. Just as a certain Augustinian skepticism of sexuality helped correct for the over sensuality of pagan Rome, I think a period of over transparency is more than due to correct for the quality and scope of the deception perpetrated by the Church.

"There is no virtue in paranoia."

Sounds like something someone would say if everyone wasn't out to get them. /s

How seamlessly content like Bill and Ted slip into these conversations are easily one of the main reasons I love listening to JD and Ed.

The talk about transparency was very interesting, but I think a very crucial distinction was missed. It's one thing if the Church withholds transparency when there was no promise of it, but when it seems to have been promised (as in Cardinal Gregory's case) I can't see any excuse for withholding it. To my mind this is another case of the Church hierarchy acting more like a secular NGO/political organization, in this case making extravagant promises of transparency to win public plaudits, but then doing everything in its power to hide the cheese when it thinks nobody is looking.
