Ed is right. I jumped on this episode as soon as Mrs Ruvi mentioned it on Twitter. I needed to know JD and Mrs. Flynn are getting better and I miss listening to the Odd Couple kibitzing over current events.

The medicine JD needs is the one that says 'Jameson's' on the label; it can be taken with honey, lemon juice and a little hot water, or neat, according to taste (I find the former best at bedtime while small sips of the latter soothe the throat and deal effectively with bouts of coughing during the day).

On a more serious note, wasn't the possibility of the Church in different parts of the world teaching different things introduced in Evangelii Gaudium? I seem to remember something to the effect that doctrine needn't always be decided in Rome but could be left to Bishops' Conferences. I thought at the time that we were being pointed in the direction of autocephalous national churches.

It does seem to be hinted at in EG but that would be ridiculous.

Called the "Magna carta" of Church reform by various theologians and partially written by then, Archbishop, now Cardinal Fernandez, it seems like an overly optimistic, naive document written at a time when the Holy Father believed everyone would fall in line with his concept of "Church."

That Bishop's Conferences could propose or even set doctrine at odds with the Universal Church or even other countries, of course, would cause confusion and madness, well, as in the GSW and the Flemish Bishop's "rites" for blessing same sex unions.

"Magna carta" for schism maybe?

We reap what we sow.

The GSW, in various reports and documents quotes EG a good number of times.

European bishops and Rome have shown near-zero willingness to tolerate growth from the trad side of the aisle (e.g., persecution of traditional religious orders like the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate and Bishop Rey). It is hard to imagine them tolerating "flying bishops" who will attract the vast majority of young, mass-attending Catholics. They would rather the young trad Catholics join SSPX, so that they can secure their gains in power. IMO, these moves are designed to drive out opposition and impose their theology on the laity, agree or not. I hope I'm wrong, but Bishop Rey and other examples don't seem to portend toleration for Catholics of a traditional bent in western Europe.

It will be the persistence of the laity and (a few hierarchs) plus lower clergy that will keep the authentic Tradition of the Church. Deus vult

The Holy Father needs our prayers.

"O God, who choose the lowly and make them strong, grant that sound doctrine and orthodox belief might flourish, even in times of division, so that the fullness of the Gospel might be preached to all the world by those who are enlightened by the Holy Spirit. Through Christ our Lord. Amen."
