Ed can probably rest assured in being unlikely to appear in the demographics targeted by the DUI ghouls

Just a clarification about the resignations -- two professors ended their formal affiliation with the Liu Institute, but they did not resign from the university, where they are still professors (one is emeritus).

One factor cutting against the argument that you need to cast a wide net to staff a major research university is that in most disciplines—and true rock-star professors excepted—faculty hiring remains an extreme buyer's market.

That is to say, hiring and promotion decisions are generally exercises in revealed preference. Professors such as Ostermann are on the faculty less because they're the sort of person the university *has* to hire, than because they're the sort of person the university *wants* to hire.

This. Academics are a dime a dozen these days, even among smaller Catholic circles. Said as an academic on a 'break'.

Among the archbishops soon to retire, remember Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles. He will be 75 at the end of December. Praying that his successor will be as good a man.

Out of curiosity, does The Pillar see a dip in listeners and/or readers during Lent? I listen faithfully the rest of the year, but give up podcasts other than Bible and Catechism in a Year and Sunday School during Lent. I usually catch up during the Easter Octave, though

Rhoades as a bishop is excellent with those who live in the diocese while still being active in other areas.

I’ve certainly experienced an increasing fear of heights since having children, to the point that I don’t string Christmas lights on the tallest points of the roof any longer. I never had any issues with heights until the last four or five years. It’s also a little funny since I’m a helicopter pilot and have zero issues flying, and my dream is to fly hot air balloons. So I guess we’ll see how that works out!

Falling off a ladder is statistically MUCH more likely to kill you than a Helicopter crash. Your fear is entirely rational in this case...

What if Chicago became In persona episcopi with Rome? Wouldn’t that be fun?

Yes! Building anticipation for Easter is foundational. Burying the Alleluia is great!
