A good thought-provoking column marred by the overuse of the pretentious university-invented jargon word "totalizing". Why not just stay with recognizable English vocabulary for such a difficult topic.
I really didn‘t know there are people who question the necessity of forgiveness for the healing of the victim, most importantly. That makes me hopeful for the future of the Church in a heathen environment.
The issue I take with the idea of forgiveness is abusers can use this idea to escape justice. The perversion of mercy that takes place around clerical abuse is much more prevelant than most people realize not only with the priest but during the reporting process as well. I think it is important to clearly define what forgiveness actually is and what is is not.
