I'm personally very much in the corner of a Cardinal Stefan Oster. I served as his chauffeur during his short stay at my Alma Mater of Franciscan University in the spring of 2023 and I was struck by his mercy, compassion, devotion, and steadfastness, a rare combination these days.

I'm curious: if Cardinal Pizzaballa were to be made Patriarch of Venice, that would be a more-or-less lateral move. But if he were made Archbishop of Milan, would he retain the title of Patriarch and the style His Beatitude? Or would he lose those?

I wonder if Leo would make Alvarez a Curia Cardinal? Prefect for Clergy, maybe?

Surprised to not see any speculation re: Perez in Philadelphia!

Crossed my mind also. But I think that would be a pretty big shock.

This is badly in need of copy editing. The Pillar should at least run Grammarly or throw articles into Claude to flag errors before publishing. The substance, as always, is excellent.

Blech. I'd prefer Clippy.

First two I thought of was Oster and Varden—two me, in their witness to Christ, I feel the very hope of God and a coming of the dawn.

I am all in for Bishop Varden, I have enjoyed reading his reflections of Lent and beyond in other settings.

Can someone explain to me why Archbishop Gomez got passed up by Pope Francis and would possibly get passed up by Pope Leo?

You mention Dublin, I would note that since the 1860s only three Archbishops have been made cardinals, in the same period all Archbishops of Armagh, the Primatial See, have been created Cardinals, with the exception of the present Archbishop. Armagh is Ireland’s normal cardinatial see.
