On books and movies, I mean, I love reading books since I was 5 - whether fiction or non-fiction. But what I’ve noticed over the years is that I have more trouble imagining fictional characters than the people in non-fiction. With non-fiction, there’s always a ready real-life reference for my imagination that I can’t have while reading fiction. Which is why I often watch the movies/series before reading the book, because I didn’t know what the Pevensie siblings look like despite the vivid descriptions. My young mind might think they all looked like Harry Potter for all I know. Despite this, I often have a very active imagination, so maybe it’s just how my brain works?
St Matthew’s Passion is widely acclaimed as a most beautiful musical interpretation of the Gospel. I am have never been able to listen to it because it is sung in German. I have a similar problem with operas in Italian. I just have to understand the lyrics. I know that many will think of me as an uncultured oaf, but so it is. The Bible in the various musical genres that JD describes seems like a really weird idea. In other words, it is exactly the idiosyncratic type of thing that we expect JD to report upon.
Hey Marty, I think you would only have to try once or twice with the German and English together, while you listened to St. Matthew's Passion, to conquer it. You really do know the story and the words, so it wouldn't take much to cue you in. I realize that 'once or twice' for a four hour production is a lot, but the music is so expressive for the story that it might be worth it. Also, some people have actually learned new languages, by reading the Bible in said language. Nathaniel Bowditch, famous 19th century sailor and brilliant mind, did this. Just my two cents because this is what I did with the Passion. (I guess I'd better say just my nickel since there aren't any pennies now.)
Does The Pillar have a style guide entry for pronouns referring to AI/computers? I admit I find it jarring when they are referred to as "he" or "she." They are, properly, an "it."

I take it this advice isn’t for people lacking in imagination. Screen adaptations opened my eyes to things that reading on my own never could or did.

This is one reason why I really liked Chronicles of Narnia, as C.S. Lewis would include illustrations for some of the scenes
