First, congratulations to the Pillar on precisely naming the frontrunners in the conclave if it was short. You made me look good when someone asked me this morning and I said ithe Pope would probably be Parolin or Prevost.

Second, in your mentioning of the special relationship of an American Pope with the American government, it must be mentioned that the new American ambassador to the Holy See Burch also comes from the south suburbs of Chicago just like the Pope, so the US-Pope relationship for the next 4 years will be especially interesting.

One thing I'm gathering from this discussion is that the abuse-mishandling charges may have faded or even fallen apart under further examination...which would be reassuring, as many were understandably alarmed by the thought that their Eminences might have simply not cared.

I will look forward to further follow-up from our Pillar friends, presuming the topic continues to come up.

Yeah, I think I saw a Spanish report that the Peruvian accusations were fabricated by the Sodalitium, but I don't know enough to evaluate that report. Would be something worth following up on within a few weeks, as things cool down and settle in.

As someone who grew up across the river from Illinois the way Illinois politics usually works, or at least used to, is that Chicago is Democrat and most of the rest of the state is Republican and whichever part of the state gets its votes counted last wins.

Whoever cleaned up the audio to post this did such a great job. I imagine connections were difficult or something when doing it live, making it hard to hear everyone but JD, but this was perfect.

Wouldn’t it be something if Pope Leo speaks English with a heavy Great Lakes Chicago accent.

I think this papal transition could end up looking like the one that took place between John XXIII and Paul VI. The gregarious "progressive" with a slight chip on his shoulder is succeeded by a continuity candidate who proves to be more reserved, conciliatory, and paradoxical than his predecessor.

Such a cut above other Catholic coverage of the election of Leo XIV. Thanks so much for a highly professional presentation. I find it refreshing to hear so little of the ideological rumbles that sour much coverage.

I am happy that he took the name Leo and I do hope this naming will revive the thought of Leo XIII, an extraordinary Pope. People seem to know that he wrote Rerum Novarum and, thus, categorize him as a "progressive". Such reductionism deprives us of the vast richness of his thought, much like people only associating JPII solely with Theology of the Body. Both Popes have such a wealth of teaching. Also, given that he (apparently) only spent 13 or his 69 years in Peru (as i count the years, or did I miss his time as Bishop there), I see him as "American". I love the fact that someone has found video of him at Game 1 of the 2005 Worlds Series (won by the White Sox).

From his first words to his first Mass I am also happy to see signs that he is confronting secularism as "practical atheism", the great threat to the modern Catholic church. While this will catch all Americans in its net, I hope this is the theme of his Papacy.
