On the one hand, I rather wish they would just say what he's accused of, instead of letting people's imaginations fill in the blanks. On the other hand, I can see how that would harm the Monsignor's reputation. But...at the same time...not saying clearly what he's been accused of can harm his reputation.
I agree. A boundary violation between spiritual direction and friendship that involves multiple people and violates the diocese's code of conduct, but not canon law. I can't imagine there are that many things that fit all those criteria, but I have no idea what's in a priests' code of conduct and almost no idea what is in canon law. So, while I'm sure somebody can deduce what is being being alleged, I can't.
This is why some current priests do not offer spiritual direction in the strict sense.
