I thought it interesting to get an apology from my bishop after multiple statements trying to explain the situation. Like, yeah a bit naive not to expect the photo op, but also we pray for world leaders at every Mass and this isn't that different, but with politics there will always be outrage.
I'm disappointed this is something we get an apology for (don't think it's warranted) compared to the million other things we'll never get an episcopal apology for
To preface, I don't particularly like Trump and I don't think this meeting was a good look for the bishops.
But I don't see how Pope Leo can have an issue with this meeting. For the last several years the popes have constantly emphasized "dialogue, dialogue, dialogue" for seemingly everything. Regardless of the optics of the situation, we need to have "dialogue" with people, and this leads to meeting with Russia and taking a more neutral stance on the Ukraine war than seemingly anyone else. This leads to dialogue with the "Church" of England and their "Archbishop" of Canterbury. We need to have a dialogue with the SSPX. This whole idea of dialogue is emphasized no matter what people think, and it seems to me this is exactly that. This is the fulfillment of this mandate to dialogue with people instead of criticizing and condemning things. I don't see how you can hold to that mandate and criticize this. When Cardinal Cupich is giving the opening prayer at the DNC in the name of "dialogue," you have to allow for things like this to happen.
Why is Enzler a “disgraced” former something or other? How is it relevant to the story?
because it speaks to who the bishops trusted when invited to the meeting.
