What happened to diocesan ordinations in 2000?

That was around the time the abuse crisis really hit home in England and Wales. I think checks on candidates were also being tightened around that time. Whether those two factors produced the sharp drop, I'm not sure.

In Damian Thompson’s reporting, he has suggested a lack of “enthusiasm” among the presbyterate to Moth’s appointment, and he has described the appointment as more or less “unimaginative.”

Any thoughts on the what the reception on the ground has really been like?

Ultimately, I suppose, we’ll see what fruit there is in ten years.

I detected surprise among Westminster priests at the appointment. Some were expecting one of the English archbishops to be appointed. I think they are now generally taking a wait-and-see approach to their new leader.
