Pope Benedict XVI was also elected on the fourth ballot. Pope Pius XII was elected on the third ballot. Don’t be worried that the Cardinals came to a quick consensus.

There are a *lot* of new cardinals. They don't even know one another.

Also, "Past performance is no guarantee of future results."

Looks like they picked the one cardinal they all knew.

David Smith's avatar

Ah, I hadn't thought of that.

In an age of rush, they naturally took a shortcut. Makes sad sense.

The suspense is unbearable! I had begun to think we would have no news today... what does a relatively quick result tell us, I wonder.

Tells us that the Cardinals wanted to get out of Rome and back to their "-----tions"

It was either going to be today or tomorrow. Might as well get it over with today. There was never a chance of a long conclave; not in today's age.

Sadly, you're likely right. Efficiency rules. Except in Vatican finances, of course.

It looks like the Cardinals did not follow JD's advice to take their time.

They wanted to get done so they can go out and eat more exciting food than soup and lamb kebabs

Hopefully, it’s because they were very open to promptings of the Holy Spirit who made it clear and obvious!

The Holy Spirit leaves it up to the men. Free will, remember?

Andy Wright's avatar

Oh, for sure! I’m not suggesting that it’s just the Holy Spirit picking the Pope, but that the Cardinals pray for His inspiration.

I've always been a bit dubious of the 'take a long time to vote' stuff. Like, what have they been doing at all these pre-conclave meetings? The real question is whether they put in the right time and care to inform themselves prior to the conclave. Once the votes start its just a matter of counting and strategy.

In any case, we'll see soon enough what they decided!

So much for taking their time. I am dreading the reveal.

Irme Stetter-Karp in a white pantsuit and matching zuchetto? Pillar reader Angelo Becciu? Blaise Cupich? The speed of this conclave makes me really nervous.

Absolutely. But as Catholics, we play the long game. Christ has already won.

Very nervous. Was not expecting it to be on Day 2. Feeling great trepidation as to whose name will be announced. The longer the elections were to have drawn on, the better. Any front-runners that would secure the vote in first two days would be, morely likely than not, less-than-ideal candidates.
