This was interesting to read; thank you, Luke. I’m curious about the opposition Wilmer faced when Francis wanted him to head the DDF. Who opposed him, and why? Was there any internal opposition to naming Fernandez instead?
The main two were Muller & Pell, but as Ed Condon said at the time, there was pretty much a line of Cardinals & bishops outside Francis' office all waiting to say, "For the love of God please no!"
And I do recall hearing of some opposition to the Fernandez appointment, but not nearly as much as to Wilmer. Cannot remember source though, so take with grain of salt.

Do you mean that Muller and Pell were the main opposition to Fernandez's appointment? Or to Wilmer's?
It was Wilmer's.

Thank you, that’s interesting.
Perhaps there will come a day when "the future" and "the 1970s" are not synonymous terms.
